Ale, Good idea... I do not participate in Facebook, but from what I watch others do with it, getting Holotropic Art out there...out Facebook, sounds like a good idea. Even out of context I think it could do more to give a positive twist to HB than…

Profile Information

What is your interest in Holotropic Breathwork? (This will be shown on your public profile.)
Certified Holotropic Breathwork Practitioner, Class of 1989. I continue to do private sessions. For twelve years I operated a residential training center named The Change of Heart Center expressly for doing Breathwork.

Goto: http://www.changeofheartcenter.com/breath.html and see a movie of 42 of my mandala drawings. Each mandala shows for ten seconds. They first appear in ascending order from 1 to 42 and then in descending order from 42 back to 1. I have found that looking at mandalas in this way discloses stages in my process, indicates COEX's for me, and continues my learning from my mandalas over many years. I urge everyone to save their mandalas, photograph them and then put them into a movie format so one can look at all of them forwards and backwards in sequence. More is always being revealed to me as I work this mandala review process.

I've conducted special participant/audience HB workshops limited to specific attendees. These include: 1) Three or more generations of a single family system; 2) Parent-Child partnered; 3) Death and Dying partnered; 4) Intelligence Community partnered; 5) Recovery Professionals partnered via a special grant for the Alcohol and Drug Counselors of a major U.S. city; 6) Gay and Lesbian partnered; and 7) A year-long set-member-group that breathed together four times in the space of twelve months at weekend long retreats.

These affinity groups provided a safe set and setting for participants who may not have otherwise done Holotropic Breathwork. The process, set, setting, mandala and followup were all unadulterated, identical Holotropic Breathwork sessions. The difference was the safety mind set of the participants that wanted to breathe with a known group of participants.

I have converted a nineteen-year collection of HB music mixes from tape format to CD format which facilitates endless mixing and playing possibilities. Tapes were aging, stretching, and prevented spontaneous use of individual cuts for new mixes. The digital library now on CD, both in regular format and in MP3 format allows for playing an entire session on one CD to facilitate individual session of HB without making music changes. CD's freed much storage space and greatly expanded creative, spontaneous music mixes as all components of all mixes are easily accessible. It is a big project for those of us early practitioners who had so many mixes stored on cassette tape. I engaged a technical expert to do this for me.

How has the practice of breathwork affected your life and work? ( This will be shown on your public profile.)
Even though Carl Jung and Robert A Johnson and both said that we are born with our typography, it is my experience that the necessity of coping skills in certain family-system dynamics lead us to hide our natural typography and behave or act out with a false typography. In witness of this belief:

One tangible example of significant personal change rooted in extensive HB process is that my typography changed from ENTJ to INFJ between my 1984 profiling and 1994 profiling. My 'false self' coped via (E)xtroversion and (T)hinking, whereas my 'True Self' was (I)ntroverted and (F)eeling. My Intuition(N) and (J)udging remained the same. American society is big on '(E)xtroversion' and '(T)hinking', but it takes an inner toll on the secret introvert who feels deeply, yet knows not what to do with those feelings. HB process augmented by other intense and ongoing work gave me the confidence to let my 'true self' emerge in genuine and authentic ways; as opposed to acting out with survival mechanisms of doing/being what other people and communities rewarded. Clearly with HB process as a core anchor over a decade of consistent and persistent personal work, I gained comfort and confidence in coming to love my real self and learned to see and accept my vulnerability as strength not weakness--a real 'metanoia', change of heart.

In a similar period of time my value profile showed an integration of core beliefs leading me to test in values as: Post Conventional, Unitive Stage. Before doing HB I tested in the Kohlberg model as Synthesizer Stage which is headed in the direction of Unitive. The speed of integration using HB process clearly impacted my evolution of Values Stages. Values movements occur when Significant Emotional Events (SEE;s) are experienced. For me, it is not just experiencing SEE's, but doing experiential work around them so that they can be integrated. I do not believe we get wiser and more whole by just getting older. Wholeness clearly needs integration oriented process. Holotropic Breathwork is just such a process for turning significant emotional experiences from trauma to transformation.

These are two very tangible examples of how needs, preferences, values and styles of interrelating can each and all be substantially transformed. These movements for me are surely: a process of moving toward wholeness!

For me, it was also extraordinary to experience Synesthesia during my participation at the first Holotropic Breathwork Advanced Training, conducted at Pocket Ranch, California in 1990. This training brought together the Japanese, German and American training groups. I did back to back breathing sessions as my breathing partner chose to pass by his turn to breathe. In my second session (in quick succession) I came back with a sense and a feeling that I knew how Mozart wrote perfect music. I could see the music. If I knew how to score music, I could have written it down from the visual images produced by the music. I'd heard of, but never experienced Synesthesia, a dysesthesia in which a stimulus of one sense is perceived as sensation of a different sense, as when a sound produces a sensation of color. Breathwork only took me to this state one time, but once was enough to secure a permanent sense of awe and wonder for this particular non-ordinary state of consciousness.

Hi Thomas,

On a March 4, 2009 post in the Music section, you were discussing the Chakras and the effect of music on opening them. You mentioned approaching each chakra through the work of different schools of psychology as a way for Westerners to understand the issues of each. I was hanging pretty well with you until you got to chakra 7, the POAH. What is this? I did a google search and found the Pre-Optic Anterior Hypothalamus. Is this what you were referring to? I'm not a psychologist, just a fascinated breather that wants to know more. Thank you for the rich posts!

You can over lay, BF Skinner at 1; Freud at 2, Adler at 3; Carl Rogers, Maslow,
Huston Smith & Carl Jung at 4; Ram Dass, Stan Grof, Joseph Campbell at 5; Dali Lama, Krishnamurti, Neem Karoli Baba at 6; and at 7 the POAH, I just have space not believing in that in Body we get there... You can put your own schools, etc. at each Chakra. You can see an original painting of this arrangement on my page, just click on my mandala related art.

Hola, Ale,

From my heart to your heart live with the images as long as they are a portal for you to journey to wholeness. Some aspects, I believe, of each person's artistic expression touches the universal. As my living perspective is one of unity, it is a delight to know that these images touch your inner gold.

In gratitude for life and love, Thomas
